Mishima and basil
Based on over 50 years of research in the perilla processing industry, Mishima operates its own perilla farms, uses 4,000 tons of perilla annually, and employs advanced cultivation and extraction technologies.
Over 50 Years of Expertise in Perilla Production
In 1970, Mishima Foods Japan launched its Yukari® perilla furikake seasoning. Upon release, the product quickly won over consumers with its vivid color and refreshing aroma.
The Secret of the Seeds
To develop a perilla variety with more stable color and fragrance, Mishima Foods Japan dedicated 20 years to research. In 1999, the Hōkō® seed was successfully bred and began large-scale cultivation in both Japan and China.
With over 50 years of expertise in perilla processing, Mishima Foods boasts world-class cultivation and extraction technologies.
The Secret of Cultivation
Mishima operates its own perilla farms in both China and Japan, with no use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farms are comprehensively monitored, covering air, soil, and water sources.
Perilla cultivation in China has a 20-year history.
The Mishima farm in Dandong is currently China’s largest “Green Food Production Base for Small-Leaf Perilla”.
Located far from industrial and mining pollution, the farm’s water, soil, and air meet national standards for pollution-free and green food production.
It has obtained Japan’s JAS Organic Certification, China’s Green Food Certification, and Merieux laboratory certification.

Compared with perilla grown in other regions of China and Japan, our perilla delivers the best color and aroma.
The Secrets of Processing
With advanced perilla extraction technology, we preserve the authentic flavor of perilla products.
To retain perilla’s unique aroma, Mishima Foods has established a dedicated perilla research center equipped with state-of-the-art extraction technology, ensuring every product maintains its original, natural taste.
Every step of the process—from washing, blanching, cooking, draining, bagging, sterilization, freezing to packaging—is overseen by a comprehensive traceability system that guarantees the safety and premium quality of each perilla product.
All perilla products undergo and pass 508 pesticide residue tests before leaving the factory.
